Supporting Our Client’s Work…

We focus on resolving our client's functional, technical and aesthetic concerns while incorporating the latest thinking in education, workplace trends and technology. The spaces designed by Iron Horse support scientific or student protocols, foster creativity, enhance safety and optimize efficiency. To achieve project goals the Iron Horse team opens the lines of communication and listens to the needs of the end users. By observing their work we gain an understanding of each unique process, helping us to create efficient designs. Working with our clients we find the most appropriate solutions within the confines of the existing building or project footprint.

NIST - Building One Renovation The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a Department of Commerce (DOC) agency with the mission of promoting U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement in science, standards, and technology to enhance economic security and improve quality of life. The building includes six, multi-story wings plus a spine that houses both laboratories and office space for several technical groups. The renovation provides tight control of vibration, air quality, temperature, and all 21st century NIST requirements. The revitalized wings each have a new service corridor to provide a pathway for electrical services, temporary storage of laboratory apparatus / material, and mechanical units required for improvement of ventilation. The “gut and renovate” project replaces outdated laboratories with high level lab spaces, offices, and amenity spaces. Role: Architect of Record

Unified Metropolitan Forensic Crime Laboratory The Unified Metropolitan Forensic Crime Laboratory is a collaboration of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, and the City of Aurora Police Department. The intent of the project is to combine resources from each entity. The new crime lab will help facilitate a faster response to the community, for property crimes to violent crimes in two of the largest counties in Colorado. This project consist of a 26,000SF single story building, designed for future expansion and flexibility within the different laboratories. The program includes Chemistry, DNA, Latent Prints, Firearms and Celebrite Laboratories and their associated support spaces, including an instrument room to accommodate growth in mass spectrometers. There is also a locker area, a multipurpose room specifically designed for tours and training, and several collaboration zones which are designed to encourage idea sharing and case collaboration. Iron Horse Architects is the Architect of Record and teamed with JE Dunn Construction as the construction lead for this Design/Build project. Role: Architect of Record

USGS - National Ice Core Laboratory Modernization The National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL) facility is used for long-term storage, curating, and studying of ice cores recovered from the polar regions of the world. Once a temporary facility, the lab became the permanent, primary repository for ice cores collected by the United States Geologic Survey (USGS). The most distinct improvement was based on the design team conclusion that the replacement of the original sodium halide lights with LED lights would reduce the heat load on the cooling tower, reducing the return on investment (ROI) for the more expensive LED lights. The new lights immediately lit the freezer storage creating a safer work environment for the scientists, now able to light specific areas and not waste electricity. Role: Architect of Record
