TRANSPORTATION
Our transportation design team delivers well-coordinated projects by maintaining rigorous attention to quality and detail. We strive for excellence in everything we do, and careful examination is critical to the design of safe, maintainable, and highly functional systems. We bring experience in various methods of delivery (DB, DBB, CMGC, P3, CMAR), and we utilize the synergy between technology and collaboration in all delivery methods. Technology enables us to streamline coordination with agencies, contractors, team members, and community stakeholders. We value the end user and community perspective, and we encourage their involvement in our public engagement process. This helps us to identify safety concerns, facility/vehicle maintenance needs, vehicle movement and timing, pedestrian circulation, and constituents’ concerns and desires. Our team incorporates these elements into our designs of multi-modal stations, bus platforms, pedestrian bridges, parking garages, and maintenance and transportation related facilities, furthering our goal of Responsible Design.
RTD - North Metro Rail Line
The North Metro Rail Line is an 18.5-mile electric commuter rail line that will run from Denver Union Station through four municipalities in the northern Denver Metro area. Delivered as a Design-Build, Iron Horse is the Station Design Lead and Program Manager for six stations and a parking garage. Iron Horse manages entitlement coordination, the a/e consultants and represents the four municipalities when engaging the community. Union Station Transit Center
The transit center at Denver Union Station includes an underground bus facility that serves more than 15 bus routes. It is located between the existing station and multiple rail platforms. Iron Horse’s overall participation at the transit center required team members’ involvement on multiple task orders including design and modeling, historic restoration of the exterior, landmark preservation, Design-Build coordination, signage and wayfinding design, and coordination in support of the project. This $500M inter-modal transportation hub connects multiple public plazas with light rail, commuter rail, Amtrak and bus transit. The design of this hybrid space focused on connectivity, allowing visitors to move easily from space to space, one transit mode to the next and the accessibility of passages to make easy connections across the metro area. RTD - RidgeGate Parking Garage
RidgeGate Station is the new end-of-line station for the 2.3 mile extension of the Southeast Rail Line. This station will connect passengers from RidgeGate Parkway in Lone Tree to Union Station in Denver. This is a four level parking structure featuring three stair towers clad in metal panel and Colorado Rose Sandstone it houses 1,266 parking spaces and 36 surface parking spaces. For this Design-Build project, Iron Horse is the architect of record teamed with PCL construction. Role: Architect of Record
MTA - Purple Line
The Purple Line is a 16-mile Light Rail line with 21 stations between Bethesda in Montgomery County and New Carrollton in Prince George’s County. This new line connects four branches of the Metrorail system as well as all three MARC Commuter Rail lines, with Amtrak providing rapid east-west travel. Iron Horse serves as the Stations Technical Design Lead / Operations Manager, Stations BIM Implementation Manager, Stations Project Manager / Architect. For this P3 project, Iron Horse team is in charge of all production, coordination, schedule management, and quality control for the entire stations team. We work in conjunction with the construction, operations and maintenance, and transit authority teams throughout the project as we move through the design process to deliver functional, constructible, and maintainable stations that meet the needs of not only the transit authority but also the end user. RTD - I-225 Rail Line
The I-225 Corridor Light Rail Expansion is a 10.5-mile light rail line within the City of Aurora. This line provides a key regional connection to the East and Southeast rail lines. Iron Horse provided design for five of the stations and spatial coordination services (Virtual Design and Construction (VDC)) for all eight stations. ROLE: Associate Architect to AECOM and Kiewit
Union Station Utility Modeling
A new Central Rail Terminal (CRT) and below grade bus terminal were constructed as part of the $500M Union Station Redevelopment project. Iron Horse modeled the 3 miles of utilities that enter the site and identified areas of potential conflict for the below-grade work that would take place when constructing the CRT and bus terminal. 3D modeling allowed Iron Horse to highlight areas for further coordination and saved the contractor time and money on the project. RTD - 104th Station Parking Garage
The 104th Station Parking Garage is located at the Thornton Crossroads Station at 104th Avenue near Colorado Boulevard. It is part of the North Metro Rail Line, an 18.5-mile electric commuter rail system that will runs from Denver Union Station through four municipalities in the northern Denver Metro area. The structure includes 823 parking spaces over six levels. The first two levels are partially underground, with pedestrian entrances at Levels 1, 2 and 3. The team was able to classify the garage as naturally ventilated, saving the expense and maintenance of a mechanically-ventilated garage with the addition of area wells, and careful coordination with the civil team to grade the steep site. Iron Horse Architects was the Station Design Lead and Program Manager for the six stations along the North Metro Rail Line and managed the consultant team for the project. The project was delivered in the Design-Build method, with Regional Rail Partners (Balfour Beatty & Graham) as constructor and Stantec as the primary project engineer.
RTD - Southeast Rail Extension
The Southeast Rail Extension is a continuation of an existing 19.1 mile light rail line, extending south from the Lincoln Station to RidgeGate Parkway in Lone Tree, CO. This RTD FasTracks, Design/Build project included 3 new stations and a 4 level parking garage containing 1,300 spaces. Iron Horse is the architect of record for all 3 of the stations and the parking garage, teaming with Parsons Brinkerhoff and Balfour Beatty for station design and with PCL for the parking garage. Iron Horse managed the consultant team in design, collaboration, quality control, and submittal requirements for the stations and garage, participating in numerous constructability, client, third-party and owner reviews. Role: Lead Architect with Balfour Beatty.
